PRINCIPAL'S REFLECTION
Dear Parents:
Tomorrow our faculty and staff will begin the process of preparing for our school reaccreditation. We are currently in the last year of our five year school improvement plan. Sister Karl Ann Homberg, Assistant Superintendent for Elementary Instruction, will be providing our faculty and staff with a in-service for next year’s self-study process. This Design for Excellence process will involve all members of the school community. To complete this process, the school community, faculty and staff will need additional time. To that end, the Office of Catholic Schools allows for some additional time. This time will be coordinated with our current first and third Friday early dismissal days, not in addition to those days as widely reported via a parental email. These dismissal times may be adjusted to provide additional time to the school community to complete this Design for Excellence process and renew our school accreditation. Since the 2010-2011 calendar has not been completed exact dismissal times are not yet available.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Brian Gormley, our CYO Commissioner for organizing another successful CYO Basketball and Cheerleading season. Special thanks to all the coaches and assistants that helped with practices and games. Thanks to our parents for all the shuttling back and forth for games and pracices and to our students who represented Saint Leo’s in such a positive way.

As Always, for the children,
Mr. David DiPippa, Principal

THANKS & PRAISE

  • To Mrs. Loan Nguyen for sending in fabulous cake treats for the faculty and staff last Friday.

PTO Fundraiser Updates
Our first fundraiser with Red, Hot & Blue was successful thanks to your support.  The PTO earned $275 from families eating at Red, Hot & Blue January 27 and 28.    Ledo Pizza & Pasta donated $100 to St. Leo's PTO from our February 18th fundraiser.  Thank you to everyone who participated.  In March, we will continue our Let's Dish fundraiser (remember to use Promo Code F9-SLTG), sell Chick-fil-a Cheesecakes, and hold another Five Below fundraiser before Easter break.

Saint Leo's Second Annual Skate Night Celebration on February 2nd during Catholic Schools Week was also a hit.   It was great fun to socialize and exercise with our Saint Leo families!  A big thank you also to all the families that ventured to McDonalds as the snow fell and supported Pennies for Patients and the Ronald McDonald House Charities.

Inclement Weather/School Closings
When the Fairfax County Schools are closed because of hazardous road conditions, Saint Leo the Great School is also closed. If Fairfax County makes a change in the opening or closing of school due to weather conditions, Saint Leo the Great does the same. It is the parent/guardian's responsibility to consult first the school website, or listen to the radio or TV for this information. PLEASE DO NOT CALL THE SCHOOL. In cases of inclement weather, or other non-weather related emergencies, and the cancellation of classes once school is in session, calls from the children to the parents/guardians will be discouraged. Since our school is air-conditioned, we DO NOT FOLLOW Fairfax County School closings due to intense heat.
If Fairfax County Schools are not in session and Saint Leo the Great is in session, first consult the school website or listen to WMAL 630 AM or WTOP 103.5 FM, channel 4, channel 8, channel 9, and channel 7 for any school closings or adjustments in opening times.

Delayed Openings

Kindergarten through Grade 8

  • If there is a ONE HOUR DELAYED OPENING ON ANY 11:30AM OR 12:10PM DISMISSAL DAY, classes are dismissed at 12:10PM.

Extended Day Program

  • Delay of one hour: open at 7:50AM
  • Delay of two hours: open at 8:50AM

When school closes early all children must be picked up from the Extended Day Program within two hours of dismissal. Parents/guardians are responsible for listening to the radio or T.V. for announcements.
