1. How do I sign up as a volunteer for events?
Volunteer Forms were available at Open House and are available at the Front Office and online at the St. Leo’s web site. The Volunteer Committee will collate your requests. The Committee will provide lists of volunteers to the person heading up the activity or event. You can also contact the event leaders directly, or email the PTO at saintleopto@saintleothegreatschool.org with your request.
2. What’s the penalty if I do not fulfill my volunteer hours during the school year?
NO PENALTY will be assessed for this year of the program. During this adjustment period we will not have a penalty (monetary or otherwise) for the families that do not fulfill their suggested hours. We are currently working on an incentive program so that you are rewarded for fulfilling your obligation. You will be kept informed of any changes to the policy as they arise.
3. How do I record my volunteer hours?
Notebooks organized by family will be available to record your volunteer hours, specifying the date, the event, the leader for the event and the number of hours you contributed. The online system we have used in the past was not meeting our needs. Until we can find a suitable replacement, we’ll be using this paper-based system.
4. What if I volunteer for an event outside of school hours and can’t sign in?
Easy. If you are working an event during non-school hours, please email the PTO at saintleopto@saintleothegreatschool.org with the number of hours worked, the event name and the name of the event leader. We will manually enter these hours and keep track of these for you. (i.e. baking, data entry, CYO sports events, Scouting events, etc.)
5. How will I know how many hours I need or if I have not fulfilled my hours for the year?
A notice will be sent starting January to every family with an update on the number of hours logged and the number of hours that are still needed. You will receive an email with this current information.
6. Do I have to have Virtus training to participate?
No, some events do not require Virtus training. Any volunteer opportunity that requires direct interaction with children, however, requires that you have Virtus training. Please see the volunteer coordinator or Theresa Ferlotti to receive a list of these events. We encourage ALL of our family members to receive the training and background checks as this is important part of our commitment to keep our children in a safe and informed environment.
7. Can a nanny, au pair, or grandparent fulfill required volunteer hours?
Yes, as long as they are a part of your household and meet all volunteer requirements (Virtus, background check) then you may have a non-parent volunteer to help fulfill
the hours required.
8. Do I have to track my hours after I have achieved my 20 hours?
No, once you have confirmed with the Volunteer Coordinator that you have satisfied the required hours, and then you will no longer need to track every hour of volunteering that you do. However, feel free to keep involved and volunteer throughout the school year and remember we do not carry hours over for the next year. Tracking your hours may also make you eligible for incentives.
9. What if I am a CYO Coach, Scout Leader, PTO Board Member, Committee Chair, or hold a position that requires volunteer hours well beyond the 20 required?
If you are a volunteer for Saint Leo the Great School, but not a paid employee, for any of the above referenced positions, then you will not need to track any of your volunteer hours. We are aware of your time commitment and will automatically assume that your time requires much more than the 20 hours in the Parent Participation Program. To help us out, though, please record in the Volunteer notebook what position you volunteered for so we know not to bug you.
10. What if I volunteer as a lecture, Eucharistic minister, flower arranger, or other church related position, can I use these hours for my volunteer hours for the school?
No. The purpose of the program is to get parents involved in school functions and to help relieve volunteers and teachers during the school year and school hours.
