| Write Words 2x Each Words are written in word study notebook two times each. Number your lines and skip a line between words. Parents should check spelling and sign notebooks when assigned for homework. |
| ABC Order Sort words into pattern or sound sorts (depends on what the teacher assigns-check homework books!). Put words in ABC order in the sort columns. A parent should check that your ABC order AND spelling is correct. |
| Show and Tell Draw ONE line across your notebook paper. Pick a word from your word sort. DON'T PEEK! FIRST, draw a picture that SHOWS you know what that word means THEN write a sentence about the picture. *If you do these for homework, parents should check your sentences for correct punctuation and spelling. Drawings should be neat AND colored. |
| Sentences Sentences are almost always first written in the classroom on tablet paper.These are your rough drafts. The teachers do their best to assist the children with their editing. The final draft of sentences is to be completed at home. The following second grade sentence writing rules apply--1. Sentences must be at least 6 words long. 2.Each sentence must start with a different word. 3. Underline the word study word you are using. 4. Two sentences must be questions. Always check that you are using the correct punctuation. 5. Sentences are to be written on school table paper. 6. You will receive a handwriting grade. Take your time to work neatly. 7. Parents, please review and sign your child's work. Bring your rough drafts back to school with your final draft! |
| Pattern Sort Read your words. Then, notice the patterns (vowels and consonants). Sort them by the patterns you see. Pattern sorts rely on what you SEE as opposed to what you HEAR. |
| Sound Sort Read your words. Then, have someone call out the words to you without you seeing them. Tell the caller which sort the words should be placed in. You have to LISTEN in the sound sort. You do not SEE the words. |
| Practice Test Use the correct heading on your tablet paper. Number your paper. Have a parent call out the words to you and check them after you have finished. Circle any misspelled words. These are your stumpers. Write them 5x on the back of your paper. Have your parents sign your practice test and return it to school. |
| Final Test 15 words will be chosen from your word sort. There will be 3 dictation sentences which will include your sort words. You will be asked to write one sentence of your own with a word sort word that the teacher chooses for you. |
