You can put this sheet on the refrigerator to use every week!

WEEKLY WORD-STUDY ACTIVITIES

MONDAY:
1.  Cut apart the sort sheet and sort the words into categories like we did in school.  Read each column header and each word in the column aloud during this activity.  Explain to a parent why the words are sorted in a particular way – what does the sort reveal about spelling in general?  Choose an activity from the monthly chart that is glued in the front of your Word Study Notebook and complete the activity in your Notebook.  A parent should initial and date the square on the grid for the activity you chose.  Each activity square may only be used once.
2.  Cut apart your high-frequency word flash cards.  First, practice reading the words to a parent.  Then, see if you can spell the words as a parent calls them out.  Remember, it's only the first day with these new words, so if you misspell them it's fine!
3.
Return your Notebook to school tomorrow!  You will need to use your notebook in class every day.  Put your sort words in an envelope or a Ziploc bag and keep them at home to use the rest of the week.

TUESDAY:

2.  Practice high-frequency word flash cards.  Try spelling them again, see you many more you can spell today!

THURSDAY:  Do a writing sort (practice test) on tablet paper to prepare for tomorrow.  A parent should call out the words in random order, you should write them in categories on tablet paper.  After you write your sort words, a parent should call out the high-frequency words, write them at the bottom of the page.  A parent should circle any misspelled words.  Write them 5x on the back of your paper.  A parent should sign your practice test, return it to school on Friday.  Keep the words until Monday!  If a new sort is not sent home on Monday, you will be using the same words again for a second week!
