You can put this sheet on the refrigerator to use every week!

WEEKLY WORD-STUDY ACTIVITIES

MONDAY:  Cut apart the sort sheet and have your child sort the words into categories like we did in school.  Your child should read each column header and each word in the column aloud during this activity.  Ask your child to explain to you why the words are sorted in a particular way – what does the sort reveal about spelling in general?  Ask your child to sort them a second time as quickly as possible.  Then, put the words in an envelope or a Ziploc bag and keep them at home to use the rest of the week.

TUESDAY:  Have your child sort the words and then arrange them in ABC order by category or column.  Once again, your child should read each column header and each word in the column aloud.  Then, your child should write them down on tablet paper and bring them to school tomorrow.  Put the words away to use again.

WEDNESDAY:  Have your child choose three words from the sort.  Write a sentence using each of the words.  One sentence should end with a period “.”, one sentence should be a question “?”, and one sentence should be an exclamation “!”.  The word “I” may only be used once to begin a sentence.  Be sure to set-up your tablet paper like the example provided, and underline the sort word in each sentence.

THURSDAY:  Do a writing sort on tablet paper to prepare for the test on Friday.  As you call out the words in random order, your child should write them in categories.  For the first few weeks, your child can write the headers at the top of the page.  After the first month or so, your child will not need to use the headers anymore.  Call out any words your child misspells a second or even a third time.  No need to save the sort words anymore!
